Since 2018, the football world has got to see Richmond’s Monique Conti run riot in the AFLW competition. Injecting her pace and skill into games to excite fans.
Well, in twelve months time, we could be seeing a similar version of her enter the league. 18-year-old Zippy Fish looms as one of the next stars of women’s football given her natural ability.
The West Australian has been playing in the WAFLW for the East Fremantle Sharks for the last couple of years, and has excelled. Averaging 23.2 disposals per game in 2024 including a 39-touch outing against West Perth where she showcased her array of weapons.
Similarly to Conti, her game is based around elite pace and speed in contests, as well as first class ball use when it comes to kicking. And while she is never the tallest player on the field, standing at just 160cm, she is extremely evasive and slippery.
Over the years, Zippy has been utilised behind the ball in the backline and on the wing, but has found a home in the engine room more recently.
She has no problem finding the ball, whether that's on the inside or the outside, and covers the ground both ways better than most. The speedster forecasts as one of the most complete midfielders in the draft pool.
Fish also has clean hands and great vision with ball in hand. It may not come as a surprise that she possesses a basketball background given her athletic traits on the field.
Her athleticism was on full display during the national combine. Placing fifth in the 2km time trial, second in the 20-metre sprint, first in agility, and top-ten in both the vertical jumps.
Short for Zipporah, Zippy has already built an impressive junior resume out west and projects inside the top five on draft night.
She was a part of the AFL Academy squad this year, was named All-Australian in the U18 girls and won East Fremantle’s best & fairest for the season.
A fair final junior campaign.
Not only that, Fish won best-on-ground honours in last year’s WAFLW Grand Final against Claremont, registering a game-high 26 disposals and seven tackles.
Zippy, like her hero Conti, will no doubt be a fan favourite for years to come at whichever club she lands at.
